Prior Learning Questions

Check you're on the shortest path to degree completion by discussing  these questions in your first advising meeting. Up to 30% of undergraduate credits and 6 credits at the masters level may be earned through prior learning assessment. Students awarded prior learning credit are five times more likely to complete their degree with savings in time and money.

Advanced high school classes in many European countries and some on other continents is equivalent to first year general education classes in the United States. Consult the international (by country) Academic Credentials for Undergraduate Admission to learn if your high school transcript qualifies for advanced standing credits. Then check your academic record linked through your IVUE page to see if this is articulated.  If not, review your transcript with your academic advisor at your first meeting, then request Records to evaluate your high school transcript.

If English is not the language in which you completed high school studies, review your transcripts with the International Languages Department for possible credit or ACE language requirement waiver. Exams are available in French, German, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, or Spanish (other languages may be arranged). Advanced standing options are possible too.

If you earned AP or dual credit, tell your academic advisor at your first meeting! Request original transcripts for all credit earned. Check the evaluation in your undergraduate academic record in IVUE. Avoid classes similar to those you completed in your last year of high school, until your transcripts are articulated. If yes, consult these tables to find what credit may be counted towards your Andrews degree. Be sure to discuss this with your academic advisor before registering for your first semester. Email articulation@andrews.edu to request that your high school transcript be articulated, if the expected credits are not visible in your .

Not sure? Log in to your to view all credits transferred and grades for Andrews classes. If not, request the missing official transcripts, forward confirmation emails that transcripts were sent to incomingtranscripts@andrews.edu, then email articulation@andrews.edu to notify Records that a transcript should be available to evaluate. Follow up in a few weeks if the transfer credits are not yet visible in DegreeWorks.  Be sure to let your academic advisor and financial advisor know if any transcripts have not yet been articulated as this can impact what they advise from the start.

If you completed classes through entities such as MCOE, ARISE, StraighterLine, study.com, etc., request official transcripts sent to incomingtranscripts@andrews.edu and discuss possible petitions with your academic advisor first. Email questions to the Prior Learning Director, or use the  to determine possible credit awards.

If yes, check the was received by Undergraduate Admissions. If not, request now and follow up until articulated.  Discuss your training with your academic advisor and our Veterans Officer first. You may also email the Prior Learning Director for help.

If yes, credit for prior learning may be possible. Send copies of all to sdestudents@andrews.edu and make an appointment for review and credit determination.

If prior learning matches outcomes of an AU course, email a resume to sdestudents@andrews.edu. Validation through skills assessment or course-specific portfolio assessment may be possible, in consultation with the Prior Learning Director and the applicable department chair. 

Credits awarded for prior learning at another institution will not be directly articulated. Original transcripts for credit-by-exam and documentation for validation or portfolios will need to be reviewed for Andrews credit award decisions.  with Prior Learning Director Glynis Bradfield (glynisb@andrews.edu, 269.471.3432) to assist in this transfer process.
