Biography

Rorabeck’s experience with forensic chemistry began with a student internship at the Illinois Department of Public Health which handled most of the forensic toxicology for Illinois Coroners.  Upon graduation, he assumed those responsibilities in the fledgling laboratory of the Lake County Coroner’s office in Waukegan, Illinois.  For the next 24 years, Rorabeck directed the growth of that lab through the evolution of increasingly sophisticated lab technologies applied to post-mortem samples.

As a Deputy Coroner, Rorabeck interacted with doctors, lawyers, police officers, funeral directors and policy-makers.  He also developed a relationship with the Illinois Eye Bank as a volunteer procurement technician.  He began working as a Certified Eye Technician in 2005 which led to a move to the Midwest Eye Banks in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

John has been pleased to expand the department’s course offerings with a class in forensic chemistry.  Students are introduced to the various fields of forensic science with particular emphasis on how analytical chemistry can assist in criminal investigations.  Laboratory techniques develop the skills for instrumental analysis of illicit drugs as well as preparation for presenting an effective court testimony.
