AU Distance Education
Document Delivery Policy

Eligibility

AU students who live 100 miles or more from AU and have a currently validated Andrews ID card and an Andrews username and password are eligible for this service.

What you can request

Off-campus students with U.S. or Canadian addresses may borrow circulating books, i.e. status says “ Available,” and journal articles held by JWL. All materials requested through ILL must be used in accordance with U.S. Copyright Laws. Please note that irrespective of your location you may request articles and book chapters not held at the JWL through interlibrary loan services.

Delivery

Books are delivered via UPS which usually take about 3-4 days to the address on file. Journal articles are delivered electronically to your Andrews email account.

Returning Materials

The library pays for return shipping but you must request the library to send you a prepaid return label vial email a week before the due date (on the book strap). Otherwise, the patrons pay for the return shipping and insure each book for $100.  Alternative, materials may be returned in person.

Loan Period

Books are loaned for four months with one renewal. Date due is when the book must be back in the library. Allow sufficient time for travel.

Recall

Books are subject to recall after three weeks. When a book is recalled, the new due date is three days after the recall invalidating the date on the book strap. Overdue fees will then apply to the new due date.

Number of Requests

You may make a request for 50 items per week and 20 journal articles within the same period. Processing is based on first come, first served.

Cancellations

If a request is no longer needed, immediately send a cancellation notice to ill@andrews.edu with the complete citation of the item being cancelled.

Fines and Fees

Overdue fines are $.50/day/item. There is a $25 fine for recalled books that are received or postmarked after the recall due date. The library will charge $120 replacement fee for a lost item, or an item that is one month overdue. All fines and fees will be billed through the Student Accounts office.

Copyright Information

Where document delivery to our distance education students requires making copies of books and or articles, application of Section 108 of copyright regulations shall apply and the following copyright regulations shall apply:

  • Book Chapter. Not more than one chapter, or a maximum of 10% of the work from a copyrighted book may be photocopied and mailed to a distance education student.
  • Multiple Photocopied Chapters or Articles of Copyrighted Works. A patron may not ask that this be bound together as it would be considered an anthology. Creating anthologies of copyrighted works is an infringement of copyright.
  • Journal Articles. A patron may request up to five articles in one calendar year from a single periodical or magazine per year from any journal title published within the last five years. The articles allowed are counted from the entire five year span and are not counted as five from each year. This is called the “the CONTU Rule of Five.”
  • “Rule of Two”. A patron may request only one article per issue to be scanned and photocopied. Copyright permission must be request for the second and subsequent copies.
  • Purchased Reprints. No photocopies may be made from purchased reprints.
  • Consumables. Photocopies may not be made from “consumable works,” such as workbooks, exercises, tests, or test booklets, answer sheets, etc.

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyright material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction not be "used for any purposes other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that use may be liable for copyright infringement.
