Biography

I love to read. In my academy years I associated "English" with the study of grammar and proofreading, and I couldn't have cared less about it. But at the midpoint of my college experience, after dabbling in several other majors, I found that English was (or could be) about reading great stories and poems. I promptly switched my degree and have never looked back.

The Andrews English Department holds a special place in my heart. I came here in 1982 as a Master's student, and returned as a full-time teacher in 1988. I feel privileged to work in a department with a history of excellent teachers and students, and along with my colleagues we do our best to carry on the banner of attention to the word.

When I'm off duty, I enjoy playing upright bass in a local jazz quartet, fitness and exercise related activities, and hitting golf balls.

Current Research or Professional Activities

My current research centers around the scholarship of teaching.

With my colleague, professor Corredera, I published “Fiction and Film: Thoughts on Teaching Potentially Controversial Narratives,” Journal of Adventist Education (October/November 2015): 22-27.

With my colleague, professor Coria-Navia, I presented “Assessing the Impact of Faculty Book Club on Self-Reflection and Teaching at 老司机传媒,” Scholarship of Teaching conference, March 30, 2017, 老司机传媒. Professor Coria-Navia and I have two spin-off articles from this research under review.
