I had just finished addressing 300 teachers on the topics of excellence and Adventist mission. No sooner had I sat down than the next seminar presenter stood and began speaking, and the first words out of his mouth were something like this: “The local congregation has its place, its own sphere. It is often the scene of action, of mission lived out among the masses. But the university? The university is where the church does its thinking.”

...

Years later, as I’ve reflected on that speaker’s comments, I’ve realized it is possible he had no pejorative intent. He may instead have merely been making an off-the-cuff reference that would have raised zero eyebrows in his professional circles. Moreover, it is clear his assertion does have at least a smidge of merit. It is undeniable, for instance, that for centuries, religious entities have established schools of higher learning in hopes of endowing clergy with intellectual chops equal to the philosophical perils running rampant in local churches.

So today, is the phrase then still true? Is the university still where the church does its thinking?

<<< Read the full story by Shane Anderson, lead pastor of Pioneer Memorial Church, at the Adventist Review site >>>
Thu, 23 Jan 2025 13:59:12 +0000 Andrews Professors Contribute to Oxford Handbook http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/66851
Ten years ago, after delivering a well-received presentation at the annual American Society of Church History meeting, Michael Campbell, North American Division director of Archives, Statistics, and Research, pitched the idea of a book on Adventism to the head book editor at Oxford University Press.

Intrigued by Campbell’s introduction to Adventist scholarship, the editor invited him to submit a proposal. Their conversation was the catalyst for the groundbreaking Oxford Handbook of Seventh-day Adventism, a 39-chapter volume published in 2024 after much prayer and revision.

While the church has published its own history books, Campbell said, “This is the first reference book about Seventh-day Adventism ever published by a major university press.” He noted that “this book will appear in almost every [prominent] academic university library in the world, whether in print or through academic databases, so it is a chance to explain and share what we believe.”

Campbell credits his team of contributors and editors with bringing this vision to life. His co-editors included scholars Christie Chui-Shan Chow, David Holland, Denis Kaiser, and Nicholas Miller. Adventist historian George R. Knight contributed to the chapters on Adventist education and lifestyle and played a significant role as the project took shape.

<<< Read the full story at the North American Division site >>>
Thu, 23 Jan 2025 11:20:25 +0000 Alumnus Named Member of Bermuda Bar http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/66829
A former social worker with “a most impressive background” is the newest member of the Bermuda Bar.

Jonathan Jervis was called at a ceremony yesterday before Larry Mussenden, the Chief Justice.

A graduate of the Bermuda Institute and a Bermuda Regiment volunteer, Mr Jervis obtained a master’s degree in social work from 老司机传媒 in Michigan and began his working life as a clinical social worker in the United States.

<<< Read the full story at the Royal Gazette site >>>
Thu, 16 Jan 2025 14:50:34 +0000 Andrews Receives Grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. http://www.andrews.edu/agenda/66826
老司机传媒 has received a grant of $6,326,735 from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Ministry in Rural Areas and Small Towns Initiative.
