PLANT SERVICE - Electrician

Position summary

Maintains and repairs power, lighting, and all electrical equipment and electrical services on the University campus by performing the following duties.  Maintains and tests campus fire and security equipment / systems.  Rotates weekend shifts with other electrician to take call for emergency service calls including repairs beyond normal work hours as required. May be called in at any time to assist with emergency repairs as needed. When on normal call rotation the response time to an emergency should not exceed more than thirty minutes. Current USA or Canadian Driver Licenses.

 

Qualifications summary

Must have at least two years experience in the electrical trade.  Also should have working knowledge of the equipment and techniques used in contemporary electrical practice.  Must have knowledge of the relevant State codes, Acts, and Regulations.  Successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in electricity perferred.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Handles wiring, installation, and repairs of equipment and fixtures such as motors, small tools, switch gear, transformers, circuit breakers, and fuse boxes.  Inspects and installs wiring and conduit in fixtures for conformance to local electrical codes.  Inspects, maintains, and installs emergency lighting systems, exit signs, and associated equipment. Checks interior and exterior lighting circuits, wires floodlights and outdoor Christmas decorations.  Repair or replaces faulty light fixtures, sockets, ballasts, switches, outlets, fuses, lamps and warning lamps.  Repairs stoves / ovens for campus housing and other campus buildings. Checks fire alarm system, ensuring annunciator lights and circuits are functioning correctly.  Investigates fire alarm and reset the system.  Provides periodic testing and maintenance of emergency power systems.  Provides emergency assistance to other departments as required.  Observes safety regulations.  Explains specifications and work orders to workers, and assigns duties.  Suggests changes in working procedures and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.  Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.  Initiates or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.   Makes visual inspection of transformer stations. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet necessary deadlines.  Confers with other tradesmen to coordinate activities of individual departments. Deals with vendor representatives concerning system layouts and requirements.  Requisitions parts for work orders, and inspects materials

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers. Ability to read blueprints. Ability to calculate load, and amperage and work with percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Physical demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and to talk or hear.  The employee frequently required to stand; walk climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  A good sense of smell is necessary.   The employee must regularly lift and / or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Work environment

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, explosives, and risk of radiation.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
